MT DIY- Let's Play a Game!

Howdy and happy 2013, all!  Here's hoping that your 2012 ended on a high note, and that the new year will bring you good health and happiness- and be filled with music!
I've, unfortunately, been sick since Friday for the second time within the span of 5 weeks : (   Very unlike me!  It's a good thing that I'd planned to share a non-singing activity with you today!

At our Christmas gathering with my mom's side of the family, I noticed in passing that she had large foam dice that she thought would work well for my Gram, plus my 5-year-old niece, when playing games.  My work hat landed on my head for a minute- I needed a pair!  These were an item that had always been on my (ever increasingly long) list of "to purchase", but never quite made it to the top.  It turns out, mom ordered them from Oriental Trading, and they came in the amount of 6 pair.  It also turns out that my momma is super sweet, and I can cross "large dice" off of my list : )

A loooong time ago, I made this board to use in lieu of my traditional picture schedule board (when appropriate), and called it "Let's Play a Game!"  The number rolled on the dice determines the order of session activities for kiddos.  Making the board is simple- foam board, Velcro, and a marker! Apologies for the length today, but to give you details as best as I can, here's a breakdown of skills that may be targeted, procedure for use, and pictures:

Skills:
1. Following 1- and 2-step directions, as well as a schedule
2. Being flexible within a routine
3. Counting 1:1 correspondence
4. Number identification and matching
5. Within a group, opportunities for turn-taking, waiting, cooperation

Procedure:
1. I start by giving instructions...something like: "We're going to play a game today! (excitement is always good :)  This is going to be our schedule, and we're going to use a dice (pausing to let the dice be examined).  I've put our work pictures on the board.  Each time you roll the dice, we're going to count the number of dots and then find the number on the board; then it's time for that activity.  When we're finished with it, we'll reach up and take the picture off and say it's 'done.'  We get to do this until all of the pictures are gone and it's time to say 'Goodbye.' If we roll a number after we've already used it, the dice is rolled again until we get a new number.  [If in a group, I'll add: "We'll start with __ and go around the circle, taking turns to roll the dice"]."

2. I set up the board by putting a "Hello" and "Goodbye" picture card before/after the first/ last number- for my kiddos, these are constants and need to have their place at the start and end of the session.  The rest of the cards can be placed randomly.

3. Student(s)/ Client(s) roll a dice.  Before I had these fun yellow ones, I'd made one (again, a loooong time ago) from a box.  I like using a large one for several reasons:
a). it gives a larger visual field
b). it's easier to manipulate physically
c). it's different, and more intriguing than a regular ol' pair of dice

4. Activities (or interventions, tasks, if you prefer) are performed as their respective numbers are rolled.  Say the first number rolled is 5.  According to my board, "conversation" would be first.

5. Complete the activity.

6. Once finished, remove the card from it's numbered space.

7. Remind individual/ group that if a number is rolled again, the dice continues to be rolled until a new number appears.

8. Repeat until 'schedule' and session is complete.

Adaptations:
- if it's hard for a client to look at the numbered game board and want to visually follow the activities from 1-6, you can elect to roll all numbers at once to make a complete schedule, and transfer ordered pictures to another board.  This still helps to work on the aforementioned skills, but may make more sense to some.
- you may wish to use the pair of dice and the concepts of addition/ subtraction to get a number.
- a dice could be modified to hold (Velcro?) the actual schedule pictures, done in the order they're rolled.
- if hello, goodbye + 6 other activities is too much to fit in a time frame, I've done this: place the greeting and closing at #1 and #6, respectively.  Instead of rolling for these numbers, ask the student to find those numbers on the dice.

Should you be feeling DIY, and want to make the dice, I used a small box; taped it closed; applied white card stock; drew dots with a black Sharpie; used a little clear packing tape.  Ta-da!

I work primarily with young children through early adolescents, but you could surely adapt this to fit other age ranges!  Questions or comments?   I love input!  Hope this is helpful : )

A Whole New Decade

So, friends...yesterday I turned 30.  3-0! No longer a 20-something.  I  have been told multiple times [because, honestly, I'm not thrilled about this change yet], that age is a state of mind, not a number...which I am thankful to be reminded of, because I still feel like an early twenty-year-old, even though I have a brand new first number to get used to!
With this, I thought that I would give you a present for my birthday.  A few of my kiddos have been working hard on numbers, specifically counting by different intervals:  2's, 5's, and 10's.  Since I'm at a new 10-year mark, I'm sharing a "Count by 10's" little ditty with you.  You can hop over to my Bandcamp page and download the mp3, sans charge.  Celebrate!
I am proud of and, again, thankful for all that I have accomplished and been presented in during my last decade [see- that just sounds weird!]...and although I'm not taking this change quite in stride yet, am very excited to see what the next 10 years brings-  and I look forward to sharing it with you : )

One

You may remember a birthday-related song that was posted last month. While December bombards my family with birthdays, January brings some relief. However, there is a certain birthday that I'm looking forward to on Friday- Music Matters celebrates turning one!

Time does pass so quickly. While I've been working as a music therapist since the completion of my internship in the first half of 2006, I've only been my own boss for not quite a quarter of that time. I must say, that I try to be thankful each day that I made the decision to form my own company. I have been blessed to work with amazing families and their children, as well as other therapists and educators. Thanks to all of you, for allowing me to write this post and celebrate one year! It will be very exciting to look back at this time next year and see what 2010 has graced me with.

In (advance) honor of the day, I'm sharing another birthday tune with you. Focusing on birthday candles, this may used a few days leading up to a party or the introduction of a cake, to help prepare for blowing candles out. As you can see in the accompanying photo, there are plenty of spaces to add more candles.

BLOW THE CANDLES OUT
CHORUS:
Candles on a birthday cake,
Close my eyes, and a wish I’ll make
Take a deep breath and ready-set-go!
Blow….blow the candles out!

Each candle on my birthday cake stands for a year
Of my life that I’ve been here
Every year there’s one more candle for me,
Lighting the cake for all to see.

CHORUS

This year is my (#) birthday,
So, on the cake, (#) candles we’ll place.
Let’s count the candles nice and slow,
Ready- set-go!

10 Birthdays

Yup..10...That's the number of birthdays I will celebrate with (mostly) family and friends during the month of December- including mine next week!

So to keep up with all of the festivities- we attended 2 birthday parties last weekend!- I decided to stray from a holiday-themed song and instead share a birthday-related one. It works, too, because I've been working a lot on this topic with some of my students, which is appropriately answering the questions "How old are you?" It seems to become troublesome, because it's so similar to "How are you?" Already, one student is doing a great job of answering the former question correctly, when paired with this song.

While there are some of us who would rather not answer the question (truthfully), it's very important for kids to understand the concept of age, especially as it changes from year to year!

I AM (_) YEARS OLD
Every year we get a little bit older,
We add one number to our age
Every year we have a birthday,
That day stays the same, but our age will change.
Think about it, you’ll know what to do
When someone says, “How old are you?”
You say…

I am ___ years old,
This year I am ___ years old.
I am ___ years old,
This year I am ___ years old.
This year I am ___ years old.

Perfect Timing!

I couldn't have timed today's song any better, even if I had planned it...which I did, actually...but didn't know about the weather : ). Greater Cincinnati got it's first dusting of snow this morning, so along with the headache of traffic delays comes something much more enjoyable- singing about the snow!

At work, I try to include at least one counting activity that centers around each holiday or season. So naturally, December begs for some snowy songs. I search online for simple pictures if I can't find what I need on Boardmaker, Word ClipArt, or through my own drawing skills. Small strips of Velcro are attached to the backside of each individual picture, which makes it great for accessible, no-budge counting manipulatives (in my experience, music therapists could buy stock in Velcro!). A specified number is attached to a surface with opposite-surfaced Velcro, and the counting begins!

COUNTING SNOWFLAKES
Snowflakes, snowflakes
Falling down
From the sky onto the ground
In a drift or on branches of a tree
How many snowflakes do you see?

Count them for me. *
I see...

*Depending upon the student, I may say "Count and give (specified number) to me" or "Point and count for me."
